Skin Hydration From the Inside Out: What Actually Holds Water In
Why drinking more water doesn't fix dry skin, the difference between water content and water loss, and what ceramides, HA and electrolytes each do.
There is a particular frustration behind this question. You drink water, constantly. You own moisturizer, possibly four of them. And your face still feels tight by mid-afternoon, flakes around the nose, and stings faintly when you put anything on it.
The usual advice is to drink more water, which you are already doing. It stalls because it treats hydration as one thing. It is two. How much water is in your skin and how fast it leaves are separate problems with separate levers, and everything useful gets clearer once you pull them apart.
- Past genuine dehydration, more water does not keep making skin more hydrated. Your body allocates water, and skin is not first in line.
- Most tight, flaky, stinging skin is a leak problem rather than a supply problem.

Does drinking more water fix dry skin? Mostly no, past a point
If you are genuinely under-hydrated, correcting that helps everything, skin included. It is the rest of the curve that disappoints: your body defends blood volume and plasma concentration within narrow limits, and once those are satisfied the surplus leaves as urine. Nothing routes the extra to your cheeks.
The water in the outer layer of skin arrives by diffusion from the tissue underneath, and how much stays depends far more on whether the surface is sealed than on what you drank at lunch. The research here is small and mixed, so the honest position is unglamorous: drink enough, then stop asking the glass to do a barrier's job.
Two different problems: water content, and water loss
Water content is how much water the outer layer holds, kept there by natural moisturizing factor, meaning amino acids, urea and lactate inside skin cells, plus the water-binding sugars in the tissue below.
Water loss is transepidermal water loss, the steady evaporation happening through skin all day whether you notice it or not, and its rate is set by the lipid matrix at the surface. Almost everyone describing dehydrated skin means that second problem, and adding water to a leaky container is the wrong lever.

The barrier: ceramides, lipids and the wall that leaks
The standard picture is brick and mortar. Flattened skin cells are the bricks; a matrix of lipids is the mortar sealing the gaps. Ceramides are the largest share of that mix, with cholesterol and free fatty acids, and the proportions matter as much as the amounts.
Thin the mortar and two things happen at once: water leaves faster, and irritants get in more easily, which is why a compromised barrier stings at products it used to tolerate. Harsh surfactants, hot water, cold dry air and age all pull the same way.

Humectants: what hyaluronic acid does, and where it sits
A humectant binds water and holds it nearby. Hyaluronic acid is the famous one, though glycerin quietly does most of the work in most formulas. Your body already makes and keeps it, mainly in the dermis as part of the scaffolding between cells, plus joints and eyes.
You will see "holds up to a thousand times its weight in water" on every box. That is a property measured in a lab, not a promise about your face. What a humectant does on skin is more modest: it draws water into the upper layers and keeps the surface comfortable, as long as something stops that water evaporating straight back off.

Why minerals decide where the water goes
Water follows solutes, and that one line of physiology explains why hydration is not purely a volume question. Sodium, potassium, chloride, magnesium and calcium set the gradients deciding whether water sits in blood, inside cells, or in the tissue between. Drink a liter of plain water when your sodium is low and much of it goes straight through you.
Sweat is a double loss: water and minerals leave together, and replacing only the water leaves the ratio worse. What quietly makes water loss worse
- Long, hot showers. Heat plus surfactant strips lipids more efficiently than either alone. Shorter and cooler is the highest-value change most people can make.
- Over-exfoliating. An acid toner, a retinoid and a scrub in one week is a barrier problem dressed as a routine. If your skin stings at water, this is usually why.
- Dry air. Indoor heating, airplanes and winter lower humidity, and the drier the air, the steeper the gradient pulling water out.
- Wind. It strips the thin humid layer that sits against your skin, so evaporation speeds up.
- Short sleep. Barrier repair is largely an overnight job and short nights give it less runway. Harder to study cleanly than a moisturizer, so treat it as a sensible bet rather than a proven lever.
Topical, internal, and the honest division of labor
Topical products do one thing nothing swallowed can: sit on the surface and slow evaporation. Occlusives and emollients are the only real answer to a leak, and they work the day you use them. If your skin is tight right now, start there.

A routine that fits on one hand
- Shorten and cool the shower, and get moisturizer onto damp skin within a minute of getting out.
- Layer in order: humectant while skin is damp, then a cream or balm over the top.

Questions people actually ask
Does drinking more water help dry skin?
Correcting real dehydration helps, but past that the returns flatten quickly, because the body prioritizes blood volume and excretes the surplus. Skin moisture depends far more on how well the surface holds water in than on how much you drank. Drinking enough is worth doing; expecting it to replace moisturizer is not.
What is the difference between dry skin and dehydrated skin?
Dry usually describes skin short on oils and lipids, which is closer to a skin type. Dehydrated describes skin short on water, which happens to oily skin too. One asks for lipids, the other for humectants plus something to seal them in. Plenty of people need both.
Do hyaluronic acid supplements do anything for skin hydration?
Oral hyaluronic acid is an active area of research rather than a settled one. It is broken down before absorption, and how the resulting fragments behave is still being worked out. It is a reasonable addition to a daily routine, but not a substitute for sealing the surface.
Do I need electrolytes if I am not an athlete?
Minerals are what your body uses to decide where water sits, so they matter whenever losses run high, not only during exercise. Dry indoor air, long flights, heat and heavy sweating all cost you water and sodium together. If you drink plenty of plain water and still feel parched, minerals are worth a look.
Why does my skin feel tight straight after washing?
