Probiotics, Prebiotics and Postbiotics: A Plain-English Guide
The three terms untangled, what CFU really tells you, why strains matter more than counts, and how to start without upsetting your stomach.
Three words, one syllable apart, used almost interchangeably by people selling things. Probiotic, prebiotic, postbiotic. They describe genuinely different things, and once you can tell them apart, most gut supplement labels get easier to read and a few get much less impressive.
Here is the untangling, plus the parts of a label that carry real information: what CFU means, and why a strain name beats a count.
- Probiotics are live microbes. Prebiotics are food for the microbes already in you. Postbiotics are inactivated microbes, or what they produced.
- CFU counts viable organisms, not effect. A bigger number is not automatically better.

The three definitions, in one pass
Probiotics are live microorganisms intended, in adequate amounts, to confer a benefit. The operative word is live: they must survive manufacturing, the shelf, stomach acid and bile, in that order.
Prebiotics are not alive at all; they are substrates your microbes can use and you cannot digest, mostly specific fibers. A prebiotic feeds the population you already have rather than adding to it: less glamorous, arguably more reliable.
Postbiotics are the newest term and the loosest: preparations of microbes no longer alive, or the compounds they produced: heat-treated bacteria, cell wall fragments, fermentation metabolites. The logic is that some of the effect may not need a living organism. Least settled of the three, and best treated as promising rather than proven.

One connection worth noticing: prebiotics generate postbiotics. Gut bacteria fermenting fiber produce short-chain fatty acids, and butyrate is a preferred fuel for the cells lining the colon. Eating fiber is the original postbiotic strategy.
What CFU means, and why bigger is not better
CFU stands for colony-forming units: a count of how many organisms in the product are alive enough to reproduce. Not potency, not activity, not benefit. Closer to a headcount than a dose.
Three reasons it deserves less attention than it gets. The amount studied varies enormously by strain, so a high count in one and a modest count in another can be equally sensible. The effect does not scale neatly upward. And a count only means something if it is guaranteed at the end of shelf life rather than at manufacture: two very different numbers, and labels do not always say which they quote.

The gut-skin connection: what we know and what we don't
Strains matter more than counts, and most labels stop short
A microbe's name has three parts: genus, species, strain. Lactobacillus, then rhamnosus, then a code like GG. Different strains within one species behave differently, and research findings attach to the strain tested, not the species.
Which makes the standard label a problem. Most list genus and species and stop, because a strain designation is specific, often licensed and easy to compare. A brand paying for a well-studied strain is usually happy to print the code. If a label says only "Lactobacillus acidophilus, 20 billion CFU", you know what family you are buying and little else: the same read-the-panel habit we argue for in whether beauty supplements actually work.
Most people tolerate probiotics without incident, but they are not appropriate for everyone. If you are pregnant, nursing, taking medication, immunocompromised or managing a health condition, check with your doctor before adding a supplement.
Spore formers, and why Bacillus coagulans survives the trip
Most probiotic organisms are fragile. Heat, moisture, oxygen, time and stomach acid all cut how many arrive alive, which is why so many products need refrigeration and why the count on the box drifts down on the shelf.
Spore formers solve part of that differently. Bacillus coagulans can form an endospore (a dormant state with a tough protective coat) which tolerates heat, acid and storage far better than a vegetative cell, then germinates further down the digestive tract. The honest caveat: surviving the journey is a manufacturing advantage, not evidence of a better outcome.
Inulin, and the note nobody puts on the front
Inulin is a fructan, a chain of fructose units found in chicory root, agave, garlic and Jerusalem artichoke. Your enzymes cannot break it down, so it reaches the colon intact and your bacteria ferment it. That is the whole mechanism.
It is also the reason for the caveat. Fermentation produces gas. Add a meaningful amount of inulin to a diet that was not getting much fiber and the predictable result is gas and a bloated feeling for a while, not a sign something is wrong, just the process running faster than your system has adjusted to. Increase slowly, with water, and give it a couple of weeks. Some people find fermentable fibers uncomfortable regardless, and going slower beats pushing through.

How to start without ruining your week
- One product at a time. Starting a probiotic, a fiber and a greens powder in one week guarantees you learn nothing.
- Start below the full serving if the formula is fiber-heavy, and take it with food. A meal buffers stomach acid, the first obstacle a live organism meets.
- Give it four weeks. Anything shorter is mostly the adjustment period.
